Logistics insight

T T logistics (Toyota Tsusho): April 14th

i2e’s 2010 Insights program is gaining momentum with four Insights already hosted and visits to Aisin Australia and Kraft Foods planned over the next few weeks. Limited places are available to each visit with the interest in these two ‘Best of the Best’ operations again at high levels.

All details for the visit by Gary Langenwalter to Australia have now been finalised and i2e will be facilitating two Sustainability Sensei Insights in the week commencing March 15. The visit hosted by Varian Australia at their Mulgrave operations (on Tuesday March 16 will be an opportunity for Melbourne-based businesses to visit.

The visit hosted by Mars Petcare in Wodonga on Friday March 19 will be an opportunity for regional organisations to visit and ‘learn to see’ lean and green in a process intensive operations.

The first Logistic Insight for 2010 will be held in April at TT Logistics (Toyota Tsusho) Laverton warehouse that utilises Kanban and TPS in all aspects of its logistics operation.

i2e will continue to populate the website for additional Innovation Insight visits for the first half of 2010, and a series of Service Insights and Logistics Insights.

HANSEI - REFLECTIONS

The enduring impact of an Insights visit and a book is something we often overlook until something reminds us. Two years ago the 4,000th participant at an Innovation Insight event was presented with a book. In the time that has passed, Karen Deckert and her organisation has focussed on some of the learnings of that book and applied their Lean thinking to amongst other improvements, map the Water and Waste streams of their operations.

That operation was Mars Petcare Wodonga and the book was ‘The Squeeze’ by Gary Langenwalter. Gary’s book was also instrumental in Davey Water Products Lean and Green activities that led to their Premiers Sustainability award and their Scoresby operation was again showcased earlier this month.

i2e is looking forward to have Gary visit Australia again and to showcase the reductions in water and energy that the Mars Petcare leadership team will share with participants at the Sustainability Insight later this month.

EXCELLENCE COMMUNITY CALENDAR

i2e continues to support and encourage participation in the wide range of conferences and workshops.

Upcoming events by other organisations in our community of Best Practice can be accessed via the homepage of our website. In 2010, i2e is also planning a series of Insight visits to support the conference programs of the Hargraves Institute (in March), LEA’s Lean Summit (in May) and the AME/APICS conference (in September).

The Hargraves Institute conference theme in Melbourne in early March is ‘Innovation 2010 .. a contemporary perspective’ and includes one day of plenary sessions and 3 streams of workshops on Day 2 on Leadership, Sustainability and Innovation. The visit to Kraft Foods will coincide with the conference program.

The SirfRT 2010 Operational Excellence regional conference will also be held in Melbourne’s North East region (Wangaratta) later in March, in the week following the Sustainability Sensei Insight visit to Mars Petcare in Wodonga.

Book Review

The book of the month this month is more of a resource guide to learning publications that can assist anyone on their journey towards excellence. Learning and Productivity has been a great supporter of i2e in the past and have donated the prize for the book draw at each insight event. i2e congratulates L&P on the publication of their 2010 Product Catalogue … Innovation, productivity and sustainability are achieved through applied learning Click here to register your details to receive your free copy.

FINAL THOUGHTS

i2e would also like to recognise Simon Arnold and the team of Oxfam Trailwalkers at Davey Water Products who are ‘on track’ to walk 100km in 48hours. i2e was proud to support their initiative by donating the proceeds from their recent Insight and encourages others within our ‘Community of Best Practice’ to also support the Davey team.

Whether 2010 is shaping up to be a year of change and new directions, or consolidating and building on past year’s of improvements, i2e looks forward to seeing you at an Insight event in 2010.

Good luck in your pursuit of excellence
