Leading Complex Change and Opening Space
Posted by webmaster 25 September 2006
The only fish on the menu will be you at this CIN sponsored luncheon on Friday Oct 6. Come and join the fishbowl and have your say on Leading Change using Open Space Technology facilitated by Larry Peterson.
This session is being co-designed in conjunction with www.anecdote.com.au and will be highly interactive with an ongoing rotation of luncheon participants through the fishbowl to share their views and insights on leading change in the public sector.
Open Space Technology is a powerful large group method that is used to engage the ideas and passion of participants to build momentum for change processes within Govt. business and communities. It allows for shared leadership at all levels to foster momentum for learning and change. Coupled with the use of Open Space will be the use of a central fishbowl which will very different from the more traditional presentation format.
More detail and invites are attached: Larry Peterson Invitation.pdf
If you would like to join this session and participate (or simply observe) RSVP to cinevents@ssa.vic.gov.au by Monday Oct 2.

I like the idea of how the fishbowl treats everyone as equals and empowers them to contribute to problem solving and taking responsibility for action

The principle that ‘whoever comes are the right people’ – that leaders will identify themselves – struck a chord. We see this clearly in community groups and social settings, and even in the non-core business of our work (social functions, for example). It is more challenging to foster and support leaders to identify themselves in our core business as public servants where hierarchy can be stifling.
Thanks for a thought provoking session.

My first introduction to Open Space Technology. Would like to do more research on the topic.
The presentation gave me a framework to sell ideas to enable staff to contribute and mine some of the good ideas that are out in the field.

I agree that it was a very thought provoking session. I think the greater challenge that faces us as change agents is to enable/assist our current leaders to recognise that staff in non managerial roles often have the leadership qualitites we seek but overlook because they haven’t reached a certain spot on the pay scale.

I can see where I can use the four principles and the Law of Mobility / Two Feet.
It is too easy to wait for the perfect time to do things, I feel like a do a lot of waiting and not much ends up happening. By applying the principles and the Law of Mobility / Two Feet it will help me to keep momentum, and give up waiting!
I intend to look into the Open Space Technology a to find out more, but enjoyed the taste with the fish bowl at today’s session.

How timely to remind us that leadership is there before us and within us. In complex organisations it is too simple, too easy to ‘blame’ individual(s) for not contributing, functioning and/or supporting what we believe the direction or ideals to be. Insteady we can choose to appreciate those who make themselves available, stay with the challenges, continue to contribute, share the load, converse, listen and acknowledge the contributions/ideas/future focus that others may provide. What an impowering message – thoroughly appreciated!
