Live Lean & Live Strong with Andrew Jobling
Posted by webmaster 18 April 2008
Today, 130 CIN members attended the Treasury Theatre and were entertained by author Andrew Jobling on the topic of living lean and living strong.
A former AFL footballer with St Kilda and now a experienced consultant on health and fitness, Andrew shared a number of his experiences and insights on how to get fitter and healthier with a balanced longer term view, as opposed to the usual faddish short term fixes which almost invariably fail.
As an example of developing a longer term approach the story of an native american rain dancing tribe was shared. There was some curiousity as to why this particular tribe had more success than others in bringing about rain in times of drought. When asked how they succeed after others had given up the Chief simply said “We just continue to dance until it does rain.”
A motivated long term view will succeed over a short term fix every time.
Accordingly Andrew suggests that when it comes to our health and fitness, we too should dance until it rains, and then described six simple dance steps to help get us there over the course of one year.
1) Start the day with breakfast as soon as you rise.
2) Drink an extra 500mls of water every day.
3) Eat one extra piece of fruit every day.
4) Eat at least one piece of fish every week.
5) Walk an extra 1000 steps every day &
6) Do 20mins of strength work (eg: push-ups sit-ups) twice a week.
These six small and easily implemented steps can be incorporated into our lifestyles and the course of that period make significant improvements in our metabolism and body shape.
The most salient point of these simple interventions is that even doing just one will make a difference. The interventions were then quantified in terms of calories expended as a demonstrator of how simple and common sense practices can improve our health with a longer term view.
Other key messages from the session were:
* Get your thinking and motivation right about your health, then organise your lifestyle to allow time and space to get healthy, then eat the right things and start to exercise.
* Abstinence does not work, don’t deny yourself the things you like – there is room for the luxuries such as chocolate and alcohol if the overall regime is a good one.
* Of 100% of people who join Gyms only 3% are still going and getting results 12 months later.
* The best time to do something about your health is NOW, not once it has deteriorated.
Many thanks to Andrew for some powerful insights into improving ourselves and the way we work.

An informative presentation that took a different approach – rather than preaching about what people already know it highlighted how simple changes (that are achievable) to your daily routine can have major health and well-being benefits in the longer term.
I would highly recommend the presenter, Andrew Jobling.

Thank you for organising Andrew’s lunchtime seminar.
I found it very engaging and very useful and I found the hints very practical. I have already commenced using his suggestions on drinking extra water. Andrew certainly has encouraged me to be more motivated and his suggestions will assist me in setting myself more realistic and achievable goals.
I will also pass on my new learnings to work colleagues, friends and my family members.

Excellent session and informative practical advice provided.
I don’t just think I can.
I know I can. I know I can.
I will drink two more glasses of water every day.

If only we all had a little “Andrew” voice in our heads instead of the one we do have !
I like the six step dance card and the notion of focussing on one per month, before progressing to the next. It makes it all sound so do-able. I’m willing to give it a go …. my goal = my old jeans.
Thanks Andrew and the CIN for making this an opportunity to run with.

What a great motivational seminar. I feel very invigorated and motivated when I came back to work and I found the approach that Andrew uses very practical.
What he said was easy to digest and to pass onto other colleagues, friends and family. I think there should be more of these kinds of seminars across the whole of government to help promote work/life balance.
All of the information seems very logical and it’s funny how the little things in life can make a big difference.

Excellent ! I am a 61 year old, have exercised all of my life and still doing “Around the Bay.”
This seminar has reaffirmed my beliefs in motivation, moderation, the importance of breakfast, etc
Thank you Andrew

Greetings.
Excellent session because it was clear, simple and illustrated with relevant examples. Andrew showed an authoritative knowledge of his subject matter. I got something out of it thanks !

A great seminar!
I think I can cope with the six areas Andrew identified as going to go along way to long term well-being. 1 More water, 2 more fish, 3 more fruit, 4 resistance training, 5 more walking, and 6 EAT BREAKFAST.
I can, and will be doing all of the above.

What a fantastic seminar.
It is good to se that small changes can make a dramatic impact over the course of a year. I was so inspired I walked a couple of blocks out of my way on the way back to work just so I could start my new life straight away.
Thanks Andrew and keep Dancin’ !!!

A simple yet powerful message.
Some of the thinking reminded me of a TV show where the equivalent of a months worth of eating was purchased and put on the table in front of those who would normally eat it over the course of a month. The sheer mass was astounding.
Its not what that can of Coke (or Zero/diet Coke which is probably worse for you) will do to you but rather the effect of those 100 or 200 you might drink over the course of a year ! remove them from the equation, replace them with water and you are way ahead of where you would have been.
The body is a marvelous thing when we consider how it copes when we put so much garbage into it. The seminar resonated strongly and made good sense.
I too can do this.

Andrew pointed out that most of us know what we need to do to be fit, happy and healthy.
We just don’t have the motivation to do it. And often fail because we aim to do too much.
He gave us some very simple ways to make progress, I have already started with extra water.

A simple and yet powerful session.
Emotions = Motivation!!!!.
Only 6 dance steps – I have started dancing and will keep dancing!!!!

The seminar was fantastic! Simple concepts which can be easily implemented – even within all our busy schedules, achievable goals and no gimmicks.
If all I took away with me from the seminar was some of Andrew’s passion and dedication to living a good, healthy and long life… that will be enough!
Thanks to Andrew and CIN.

Thank you to VPSCIN for organising The Live Lean and Live Strong Seminar. I found Andrew and his presentation very inspirational! His example of attaching an emotion to your goal was very thought provoking. I want to be on that beach with my grandchildren in 30 years time!!!
Thank you Andrew.

Andrew’s seminar was one of the best VPSCIN seminars I’ve attended. Not only was it simple, practical, and helful, it was very personal for me as my health has not been the best in the past few years. I will certainly learn to “dance” until it rains. Thanks Andrew.

An excellent, dynamic and inspiring session with manageable and practical tips for long term benefit.
I even walked back to work rather than take the tram.

I saw this seminar advertised a number of times and ignored it because I thought it was going to be another one of those presenters telling you how to do basic things that you already know you should do but don’t. I have attended many like that before in the past! However I did decide to attend and was delighted to discover that Andrew was different. Andrew was engaging and funny and I learnt a lot. Andrew offered an explanation for my own behaviour. I would have bought a book but I didn’t have any cash on me!

Firstly thankyou for organising a another successful seminar, l just love them. I found Andrew to be very inspirational and encouraging.
I learnt today “out with the old and in with the new”. Its all about changing your mindset, and finding that burning cause, and keep it burning.

Thanks for a great session. I came away feeling good about myself rather than feeling gulity about all the things I should be doing but I’m not. It was very positive and I have started dancing and I plan to keep dancing for the rest of my life. Even though I already do some of Andrews dance steps I plan to add some more over the coming months and to keep doing them. Small changes are easy to incorporate into a busy life and they become part of your everyday lifestyle. I have even started passing on some of Andrews tips to people I work with. Thanks again Andrew and thanks to the CIN for organising the seminar.

Andrew’s talk is one of the best presented by the VPSCIN. Andrew is a great speaker, very engaging and obviously knows his stuff. He has no doubt given such talks many times, yet he was so fresh in his approach. I really found him inspiring. His positive and well balanced attitude to wellbeing and life in general was like a breath of fresh air. It was interesting to hear how his attitudes had changed since his days as a personal trainer. Thanks for bringing Andrew to us.
